|About the Artist
John Chan, a native Californian, retired in 1980 after 29 years as a transportation engineer with CALTRANS and turned to photography - a longtime interest. He earned an Associate of Arts degree at the College of San Mateo in 1982 and obtained a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in photography from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco in 1992.
He has won numerous awards, including a 1993 Fellowship in the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain - considered the highest photographic honor available.
Since his retirement, Chan has had eleven solo shows and many group shows, including exhibitions in China and Great Britain.
For his participation in the 1996 Older American Art Show, Chan received a First Place award in photography and a commendation from the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for his artistic ability and dedication to the arts.
His recent 1996 show at the Coyote Point Museum in San Mateo shows the diversity and special techniques that he uses - solarizated photograms; palladium, silver gelatin and color prints; collagraph prints made from cardboard plates rubbed with ink and printed on an etching press.
